COCA: Great Ideas for Business Creativity

Jonah Lehrer, author of “Imagine: How Creativity Works,” will be a featured speaker at the Second Annual Business Creativity Conference, sponsored by CocaBiz, the exciting new training division of COCA (Center of Creative Arts). CocaBiz develops fundamental business skills through immersive arts-based learning experiences. CocaBiz Director Steve Knight says that, along with Lehrer and international best-selling author and blogger Seth Godin, creativity labs led by organizational development specialists and artist-instructors will offer powerful experiences to unlock the creativity needed to address tough business challenges.

There was standing room only for Stephanie Pereira’s presentation on how to bring money to a project by telling a good story. Nicole Hollway (Storycube Sukkah), James McAnally (The Luminary Center for the Arts) and Bryan Walsh (The Screwed Arts Collective) shared their experiences with Kickstarter. The panelists and their videos were funny, informative and appealing. I’d like to hear from artists about their Kickstarter plans.

Carmon Colangelo, Dean of the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, explores the homogenization of American life in a sequence of two-sided prints, inspired by a visit to Orlando Florida. “O Land O” is a playful pastiche and amalgamation of abstract maps, highways, hotels and Disneyesque images of city life. The prints were created at at Flying Horse Editions in Orlando.

Veiled Prophet Parade, 2011

The spectacular 125 unit Veiled Prophet Parade played to an enthusiastic crowd in downtown St. Louis on Saturday July 2nd. This fast paced 10-minute video summary (from StLouisan.com) covers almost all of it.

This year’s VP Parade was dedicated to artist William Griffin. St. Louis City Mayor Francis Slay and several other mayors were on hand at the opening ceremonies.

Following the national anthem, the 125 unit parade began and the large crowd enjoyed floats. helium balloons, marching bands and lots of music. Several of the floats featured dancing by the Muny Kids, under the direction of choreographer Janice Hawk. “A Night Out” was the theme of this year’s parade and it stirred up memories from the 1950′s and 1960′s.

The Art Works summer Open House is Friday, July 1, 2011. Talented teens are offering their artwork for sale from 11 to 1:30pm at Ranken Technical College: Mary Ann Lee Building, 1313 N. Newstead. Handmade prints, superhero theme postcards, and sculptures made of recycled bicycle parts, stools and lots more. After visiting StLArtWorks this afternoon I know what I’m going to do with that old antique Huffy bicycle which has been parked in the garage this past year. StLArtWorks

“Buckets & Tap Shoes” will perform at First Night.

A “Fantasea” of the arts transforms Grand Center’s stages and streets for this year’s First Night 2011 celebration. The mysterious, playful and art-filled beauty of underwater life is the colorful backdrop for this year’s festival. There’s magic, theater, comedy, dance, drama, and craft activities.

More than 27 individuals and music groups, “Justin Kredible” creating magic and comedy (video), “Buckets & Tap Shoes” performing bucket drumming and flashlight tap dancing, and “The Cadence,” 2008 finalists on America’s Got Talent, along with two firework displays, highlight the celebration.
